Will the 2024 Census be held by the NPC this year?
The 2024 Census In Nigeria, by the National Population Commission (NPC), has already experienced too many setbacks, but still scheduled to hold. For that very reason, the NPC has been planning and has been getting budget appropriations for the next census. But there were also enormous budgetary and logistical issues that had caused its delay. The census as it stands right now, is slated for November 2024.
It has had a brief on the matter with President Bola Tinubu and it is currently in the final stage of financial agreement to ensure that there are no hitches to forestall the conduct of a seamless census(Punch Newspapers) (Politics Nigeria).
Yet, there had been blended opinions regarding the investment and preparedness of the NPC. While some sources report that the NPC received 0 allocation for the census in the 2024 budget (Punch Newspapers), even as other reports that extra budget had been earmarked (ICIR Nigeria) Without political aid and the essential declarations of the President, Nigeria would be unable to receive worldwide help and perform the census efficiently (Vanguard News).
But in spite of these issues, the NPC, is poised to continue with the census, emphasising how fundamental it is to the population for all purposes of national development and planning (Premium Times Nigeria). Simply stated, while the NPC is advocating for the census to take place as planned for November 2024, there are significant economic and political issues that need to be tackled in order to ensure that can happen.
